What method did you use to install it, and was any hexediting required? I tried installing the direct way by double-tapping on the CAB file, but then when I tried to run PocketPDF, it said "'PocketPDF' is not a valid Windows CE application." (I tried this on my Samsung IZZI Pro, another MIPS CE 2.11 device. I've installed the 5/3/08 release on the IZZI Pro, as well as all my other CE 2.0/2.11 devices, after uninstalling the previous release.)

You need to rename the PocketPDF.exe to PocketPDF.exe.net or start it with "netexec.exe PocketPDF.exe". I didn't try to use the cab file to install it. I just copy the PocketPDF.exe to the device.

Ah, forgot about that. Okay, success with CE 2.11!

Apps that open:

FsViewer (HP Jornada 820 [ARM], Samsung IZZI Pro [MIPS]) (pretty buggy, though - menus don't work)
Chrono (IZZI Pro)
PDADnDRoller (Jornada 820, IZZI Pro, LG Phenom Express [SH3], Compaq Aero 2180 [MIPS Palm-size PC], HP Jornada 430SE [SH3 Palm-size PC]) (seems to work perfectly on all devices)
PocketPDF (Jornada 820, IZZI Pro, Jornada 430SE) (haven't been able to produce a readable PDF yet, though)
PPCSuDoku (Jornada 820, IZZI Pro, Phenom Express, Aero 2180, Jornada 430SE)
SuDokuPPC (no, not the same as the above program) (IZZI Pro)
BSoduko (Jornada 820, Phenom Express) (haven't tried it yet on the IZZI Pro)
Rubik (Valentin Iliescu version) (Jornada 820, IZZI Pro, Phenom Express, Aero 2180, Jornada 430SE) (works perfectly on all devices)

In the case of BSoduko (yes, that's how the makers of the game spell it), I used an SH3 version that doesn't work on my PC; on the other hand, Rubik was only released for ARM, but works on the PC as well as MIPS and SH3 CPUs. I'm curious as to when the CPU version identified in a .NET CF program's PE header matters and when it doesn't. (I've always had the impression that most .NET CF apps will work independently of the CPU version, including on the PC, which begs the question why there is a CPU identifier in the programs' PE headers in the first place.)

Tried all these apps on my Sharp Mobilon HC-4600 (MIPS CE 2.0), but all of them produce a standard .NET CF error dialog ("an unexpected error has occurred . . ."). Is support more limited in CE 2.0 than in CE 2.11? (I noticed that the "Hello World" window lacks a restore down/maximize button; don't know if that means anything.)

That sounds very good. I have not been able to find so many .NET CF 1.0 applications.
The versions for WinCE 2.00 seem to have this issue with the unexpected error when a menu exists on the form. I have an issue filed for that. I still have not been able to work it out but keep trying to. It seems like the same code works fine with 2.11 so it has to be something platform dependant.

More that open in 2.11:

Pocket AniEd (Jornada 820, IZZI Pro, Phenom Express, Aero 2180, Jornada 430SE)
Voyager (a nice file explorer) (Jornada 820, IZZI Pro, Phenom Express, Aero 2180, Jornada 430SE)
TimeMe (Jornada 820, IZZI Pro, Phenom Express, Aero 2180, Jornada 430SE)
deltaTimer (Jornada 820, IZZI Pro, Phenom Express, Aero 2180, Jornada 430SE)
Pocket Dice Roller (Jornada 820, IZZI Pro, Phenom Express, Aero 2180) (not usable on the HVGA screen of the Phenom Express though because the 'Start' button to activate the dice roller is below the bottom of the screen)
dfiMastermind (Jornada 820, IZZI Pro, Phenom Express) (appears in full screen)
YaRPNcalc (a nice multifunction calculator) (Jornada 820, IZZI Pro, Phenom Express, Aero 2180, Jornada 430SE)
Matrix Game (can't get it to work fully on the H/PCs, but works fine on the Aero 2180 ans Jornada 430SE Palm-size PCs)
Pocket Image Editor (a freeware image editor) (Jornada 820, IZZI Pro, Phenom Express, Aero 2180)
TriMet (a local transit schedule viewer for the Portland, Oregon area) (Jornada 820, IZZI Pro, Phenom Express, Aero 2180)
3Peaks, Bruce's Solitaire (two shareware solitaire games by the same developer) (IZZI Pro)
Same3 (a shareware SameGame variant by the same developer as the two solitaire games above) (IZZI Pro)

PocketDay (a PIM replacement) opens in the 820, IZZI Pro, Phenom Express, and Aero, but it apparently can't access the PIM databases. There have been a few other apps that won't open in any of the above 2.11 devices, even though I've verified that they require .NET CF 1.0 and not a higher version.

Has anyone found a javascript enabled web browser that will run?
May 30, 2008 at 9:23 PM
Another app that opens: MooreGames (Jornada 820, IZZI Pro, Aero 2180)
Jun 8, 2008 at 12:16 AM
Another two apps that open:

CounterTimer (Jornada 820, IZZI Pro, Phenom Express, Aero 2180)
Mobile ScreenTester (a dead pixel checker) (Jornada 820, IZZI Pro, Phenom Express) (opens to the initial screen on Aero 2180 and Jornada 430SE, but won't open the test after 'Start' button is tapped)
Jun 9, 2008 at 7:44 AM
Add another: Pocket Word Block (Jornada 820, IZZI Pro, Phenom Express, Aero 2180) (shows up in full screen on the 820 and IZZI Pro)

gCalc (IZZI Pro only)
Dead Pixels Checker (Jornada 820, IZZI Pro, Phenom Express, Aero 2180)
OBDGauge (Jornada 820, IZZI Pro, Aero 2180)
My Stopwatch (Jornada 820, IZZI Pro, Phenom Express, Aero 2180) (time count is way off, though)

Just for kicks I tried a few Smartphone 2002 apps written in .NET: SCalc, Smoresoft Sudoku, and Yacht Game. The last of these three works fine on the Jornada 820, IZZI Pro, Phenom Express, and Aero 2180 - though the input method in this app is very cumbersome: you have to use the menu bar for every action. The Sudoku game opens on those same four devices, and has a nice full screen option, but it closes once you try to load a puzzle. (Too bad - the full-screen setting looks really nice on the large screens of the 820 and IZZI Pro.) SCalc opens, but I haven't figured out how to use it (or if it's even fully working), since it doesn't appear graphically like a calculator.

I'd like to find some .NET CF 1.0 Smartphone apps that work cleanly - the small-size window makes it very versatile on all the different screen sizes.

More Pocket PC .NET apps that work:

Binary Clock (Jornada 820, IZZI Pro, MainStreet Clio C-1050, Phenom Express, Aero 2180, Jornada 430SE, Sharp Mobilon HC-4600)
Mind Illusion (Jornada 820, IZZI Pro, MainStreet Clio C-1050, Phenom Express, Aero 2180, Casio E-15, Philips Nino 300, Sharp Mobilon HC-4600, HP 360LX)
RGB (a color scale viewer) (Jornada 820, IZZI Pro, MainStreet Clio C-1050, Phenom Express, Aero 2180, Sharp Mobilon HC-4600)
DelMar AlarmClock (Jornada 820, IZZI Pro, MainStreet Clio C-1050, Phenom Express, Aero 2180, Jornada 430SE) (a nice shareware alarm clock with some neat features; an error message appears on all the H/PCs but not on the Palm-size PCs - however, it can be ignored and the full functionality is there; it appears in full screen on all devices, and actually looks best on the 640x240 screen)
RBCalculator (not sure exactly what this is, though it works fine on all the CE 2.00, 2.01, and 2.11 devices listed above)
Blackjack13 (Jornada 820, IZZI Pro, MainStreet Clio C-1050, Phenom Express, Aero 2180, Sharp Mobilon HC-4600) (again has the problem of inaccessible buttons below the bottom of the 240-pixel high screen on the Phenom Express and Mobilon)
Color Invasion (Jornada 820, IZZI Pro, MainStreet Clio C-1050, Phenom Express, Aero 2180, Jornada 430SE, Sharp Mobilon HC-4600) (same issue as above on the Phenom Express and Mobilon)
SmartSimon (Jornada 820, IZZI Pro, MainStreet Clio C-1050, Phenom Express, Aero 2180, Sharp Mobilon HC-4600) (didn't try it on the monochrome devices because color recognition is essential to the play of the game)
MilloNotes (Jornada 820, IZZI Pro, MainStreet Clio C-1050, Phenom Express, Aero 2180, Casio E-15, Philips Nino 300, Sharp Mobilon HC-4600, HP 360LX)
StopWatch (not the same as MyStopwatch above, this one counts the time accurately and has extra features, like a countdown timer) (Jornada 820, IZZI Pro, MainStreet Clio C-1050, Phenom Express, Casio E-15, Philips Nino 300, Sharp Mobilon HC-4600, HP 360LX)
Horloge (a simple analog clock) (Jornada 820, IZZI Pro, MainStreet Clio C-1050, Phenom Express, Aero 2180, Jornada 430SE, Casio E-15, Philips Nino 300, Sharp Mobilon HC-4600, HP 360LX) (weird quirk when maximized to full-screen on the H/PC Pro devices - the '3,' '6,' '9,' and '12' stay where they were while the rest of the clock shifts to fill the screen)
Pocket Dreidel (Jornada 820, IZZI Pro, MainStreet Clio C-1050, Phenom Express, Aero 2180, Casio E-15, Philips Nino 300, Sharp Mobilon HC-4600) (again with the problem of controls outside the visible screen on the 640x240 devices)
Langton's Ant (a simple cellular automation demo - draws small random patterns on the screen) (same devices as above plus the Jornada 430SE, Casio PA-2400U and PA-2400W, and HP 360LX) (same problem with 240-pixel-height devices)
Tower of Babel (same devices as above, with the same problem; neither of these were tried on the 240-pixel-height H/PCs due to this problem)
Bag O' Bones (another die roller) (IZZI Pro, Clio C-1050)
GraphicCalc (IZZI Pro)
eBook Reader (IZZI Pro, MainStreet Clio C-1050) (starts to open on the PA-2400W, but I can't tell yet whether it works because of lack of RAM - I get a .NET CF OutOfMemory Exception error message; only 8 MB total RAM on the PA-2400 series - a RAM upgrade of another 8 MB was released for the PA-2400W, but I haven't found one thus far)
CubiK (yet another virtual Rubik's Cube) (Jornada 820, IZZI Pro, MainStreet Clio C-1050, Compaq Aero 2180, Sharp Mobilon HC-4600)

A few other apps (BigOven and Pocket CookBook, recipe managers; and Pocket e-Sword, a freeware Bible reader) open, but I can't tell yet if they work because I haven't yet installed files for them to load (recipe files and Bible versions, respectively; I'm not sure yet how to install the former). Another app (Stack 'Em) opens and starts on the IZZI Pro and Clio, but I've never been able to figure out how to control the game functions in this app on any device, including CE 3.0 and above devices using the standard version of .NET CF 1.0. Still another app (ViewAny, an ASCII file viewer) opens, but once you tap on "Open" in the menu, the standard .NET CF error message appears and the app will not run any further.

All the above working applications are also working on my recently-acquired Compaq Aero 8000 using the SH4 version of .NET CF 1.0 SP3. One other application is working too - AndyRenamer. (Also working on another SH4 device I've just picked up - the Hitachi ePlate HPW-600ETM.)

BTW, I think I've figured out how Stack 'Em works, and it does seem to work fine, though it's rather slow on some CE 2.xx devices.
Aug 12, 2009 at 10:23 AM

I've found a few more so far on sourceforge.net that also work on all my CE 2.xx devices: VNCViewer, PocketTest, and PocketToastTimer.
